Today, the shelter is known as the Richmond Emergency Shelter and can accommodate up to 20 children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 17. The staff includes youth workers and support staff who provide 24-hour supervision of the residents in care. Once intended to serve runaway teens from the Richmond and Rosenberg areas, the Richmond Shelter now takes children from all of Houston's surrounding counties, of which the overwhelming majority are referred by Children's Protective Services. Most have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or abandonment.
The average length of stay for children at the shelter is 45 days. The majority go on to alternative placements such as foster care, a group home or residential treatment. Occasionally, a child's family situation improves to the extent that he or she can return home. Whatever the case, shelter placement opens the door to psychiatric assessment, individual and family counseling and other needed services.

The Star Riders help out at the Richmond Center as much as possible throughout the year. During the Hoidays the Star Riders hold an annual Toy Run to generate funds and bring gifts to the children at the center. Also on Thanksgiving and Christmas the Star Riders have been providing meals for the Center.
